Where does each sorted Mega Millions number sit?

Mega Millions has been drawn as 5 numbers from 70 plus a Mega Ball from 24 since April 2025. Everything on this page counts only the 162 draws since that change.

Text size Normal Large Larger

Across 162 Mega Millions draws an average draw has put 2.4 of its five numbers above the seat chance picks for them, where chance predicts 2.5.

Sorted smallest to largest, chance seats those numbers evenly across the pool, 11.8 apart at today's pool of 70. The position furthest from its seat is the fourth lowest number, at 0.5 standard errors. That is the record to draw 162 on 2026-10-23. Your own numbers go in the box further down.

What was measured one reading per draw

Sort a draw and every number has a place: the lowest, the second lowest, and so on up to the highest. Chance spreads those places evenly, giving the first of them a seat one spacing along the pool, the second two spacings along, and the last one a spacing short of the top. The pool has been 70 numbers throughout the record read here, so the seats have not moved.

A seat is not the middle of its own position, though, which is the thing that makes the second table below worth reading. The lowest number has a long tail upward and a short one downward, so its average sits above the middle of its own spread and chance puts fewer than half of its draws above its seat. Turning the pool back to front swaps the two ends, so the top end is the mirror of the bottom end rather than of itself, and chance predicts exactly half the positions of a draw above their seats, no seat here falling on a whole number that a draw could land on instead.

Where each position has averaged, against the seat chance gives it

Position Chance seats it Record average
Lowest 11.8 11.50.4 SE
Second lowest 23.7 24.00.4 SE
Third lowest 35.5 35.50.0 SE
Fourth lowest 47.3 46.90.5 SE
Highest 59.2 59.50.4 SE

The furthest from its seat is the fourth lowest number, averaging 46.9 against a seat of 47.3, or 0.5 standard errors out. Reading five positions, chance alone puts 3.2 of them that far out, so a gap that size is the ordinary case for a table this wide rather than a finding. No position sits outside the range chance allows, where reading this many of them puts 0.23 outside.

How often each position has landed above its own seat

Position Chance Draws above
Lowest 6741.4% 700.5 SE
Second lowest 7546.6% 710.7 SE
Third lowest 8150.0% 770.6 SE
Fourth lowest 8753.4% 840.4 SE
Highest 9558.6% 920.5 SE

The predicted shares in that table are not halves, and that is the shape of a position rather than anything in the record: chance puts 41.4% of the lowest number's draws above its seat and 58.6% of the highest number's, the one being the mirror of the other. Adding the predicted counts down that column gives the figure at the top of the page back again, since both tables read the same sorted draws. No position sits outside its range. Nothing here was picked out for being extreme, the question being whether the record matches an even spacing rather than which position was the strangest, so the only figure left unmarked is the furthest from its seat above.

The first 100 draws put 2.4 positions above their seats on average against a predicted 2.5, and the last 100 put 2.6 against 2.5, which is 0.4 standard errors above it. Chance predicts the same figure for both stretches, to the nearest tenth.

Oldest block on the left, newest on the right, and the band is what chance predicts for those same draws, read at the pool each one was drawn from. No point sits outside the band here. Across eight blocks, chance alone puts 0.36 of them outside, so a point outside would not be explained by the number of blocks read.

Highest 51 seat at 59.2 8.2 below it · 0.9 SE
Above their seat 2 of 5 chance predicts 2.5 · 0.3 SE

The number furthest from its seat in that draw was 07 in the second lowest place, 16.7 below its seat of 23.7. Being the furthest out of five places, it is further from its seat than a typical place by definition, so that gap is a feature of reading five places rather than of that draw.

Two numbers are enough. You can put in up to five, from 70, and each one comes back beside the seat chance gives its place in a set that size.

Nothing typed yet, so these are the numbers of draw 127, the draw at today's pool of 70 whose numbers sat furthest from their seats in total.

In the next draw every one of the 70 numbers carries the same chance, 5 in 70, wherever the numbers of the last draw sat. Where a position has averaged says how the record has looked, not what is coming.
