How often do three Powerball numbers share a block of ten?
Powerball has been drawn as 5 numbers from 69 plus a Powerball from 26 since October 2015. Everything on this page counts only the 1,418 draws since that change.
Three or more Powerball numbers have landed in the same block of ten in 13.5% of draws, where chance predicts 13.0%.
The pool splits into 7 blocks of ten, the last one short, and 5 numbers are drawn, so a block holding three of them is crowded but ordinary: it has happened 191 times in 1,418 draws against a predicted 184.7. Four in one block is the rarer sight, seen 10 times against 10.5.
What was measured blocks of ten
The pool is cut at every tenth number: 01 to 10, 11 to 20, and so on. Each draw is sorted into those blocks and the biggest of the counts is kept. A draw holding 030709 plus four numbers spread elsewhere has a biggest cluster of 3.
Blocks are not all the same size. The last one holds whatever is left over, so it is 9 numbers wide rather than ten, and a narrow block cannot hold a crowd. Every predicted figure here is computed from each draw's own pool, with that draw's own block sizes, and then added up. This game has drawn from one pool of 69 numbers throughout, so the per draw sum and a single rate agree, and the sum is kept because it stays right if the pool ever changes.

SE is the gap between seen and predicted divided by one standard error. A biggest cluster of 2 is the commonest outcome and chance puts the same size first. The last row bundles every cluster of 5 and above, so it is large by construction and does not compete with the single sizes above it. Five rows are read here and none sits outside the range ordinary variation produces.

How many numbers each block has supplied in total, against what its size predicts over the same draws. A short block is predicted fewer numbers, not treated as missing them. 1 of the 7 blocks sits outside that range. At two standard errors about one reading in twenty lands outside by chance alone, and 7 are read here.

Each point is one block of 20 draws: the share of them whose biggest cluster reached three. The band is what chance predicts for those same draws, computed from their own pools, which is why it is not a flat line. A point outside the band is marked.
Applied to this draw draw 1418 · 2026-10-10
Its biggest cluster is 2, in the block from 01 to 10 , where chance predicted 1.96 for a draw from 69 numbers. No block of ten holds three of these numbers.
Over the last 100 draws the block furthest above its predicted total is 51 to 60, with 84 numbers against a predicted 72.5. Of its numbers, 51525354555657585960, one came up in draw 1418. Picking the leader of 7 blocks puts it above the average by definition, so the margin is a position, not a push.
